I immediately thought he lost a baby. And here was someone sorta famous who was talking about it. And I wondered how he could perform the song without sobbing. Then I poked around and found this on a site called Songfacts.com. Who knows if it's true.

At one point during the writing session, the frontman had to walk out to collect himself. "The song is about realizing that today could have been the day that someone would be blowing out the candles," he said. 'It just hit me pretty hard. I remember playing the demo for my brother and I turned around and he was bawling. I didn't realize that my brother's wife had suffered a miscarriage years before. It was a pretty emotional moment.'"
I feel like something isn't fair. He got his twins. Although...he is also demonstrating an amazing capacity to empathize. So...
